Change your dryer lint after every load...

Say what !?? Have you heard this before?? Every load?? Welcome to my blog :)
My very first blog. Could I have possibly come up with a more boring opening title? And why am I asking so many questions? ...

Here is how the dryer lint, this blog, and my life are all connected.

Over the holidays I was doing laundry and after turning on the dryer, I had to turn it off immediately due to an awful screeching noise. It was an ear-piercing, this thing is going to blow type of screeching noise. Long story short, the appliance repairman came, took apart the dryer, called me in to look at ALL OF THE LINT inside of the torn apart dryer.

Him- “How often do you clean the lint out!?”

Me- “All the time!”

Him- “Every load...you have to clean it out every load.” (I did feel his judgement here)

Me- silence

Sooooo, now I clean out my lint trap thingy every load. Faithfully. Every. Single. Load. That’s all it took for me to begin this new habit, someone to point it out to me and also now knowing the consequence of not cleaning it out every time. After years and years of doing something the same way, I have changed overnight and created a new way.

I don’t know why, but this really struck me. Changing ways and habits have always felt so daunting. I resist and I make it much harder than it needs to be. I’m an overthinker and talk myself out of things all of the time. This dryer example, albeit seemingly unrelated and unimportant has helped me to shift how I think about creating new ways of doing things. My plan is to apply the simplicity of this strategy to my everyday life-take the knowledge, make a decision, and just do it...whatever “it” is.

Here’s how it’s going to look for me:

Want to drink more water?

Knowledge- I am likely dehydrated, water is amazing, I need it, I want it
Decision- I am going to drink more water
Do it- Cheers, here I am drinking more water

Want to exercise more?

Knowledge- I always feel better when I am exercising
Decision- I am going to exercise every day
Do it- Woo hoo… I am exercising, feels great!

Want to write a blog?

Knowledge- I like writing and have lots of weird ideas that would be fun to write down
Decision- I am going to write one blog
Do it- Here I am!

There you have it. The dryer lint, the blog, and me.

Here’s to 2022. May you all find peace, love, connection and health this year.
